The new year clicks over
like an odometer
marking insignificant miles
But still
it's a reminder
of that routine maintenance
that is always waiting to be done

The young man
who will bring out the air filter
to show
the thousands of miles
of collected grime
proof he claims
of a need to change

Along with the warning
of the serpentine belt
that could go any time
and leave you stranded
on a gritty January roadside
with nothing to fend off the cold
but a calendar
